How to Vote for Trish
Here is a quick guide on how to vote in the upcoming Wellington City Council elections using the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system - this might sound really complicated, but it’s really easy!
I’d love it if you can give Trish Given your #1 preference - but if there is another candidate that you would rather give that to, then I would really appreciate your #2 or #3 preference – that’s still really helpful!
Once you have enrolled, you will get your voting papers in the mail - fill them out, then either post your vote (by 7 October 2025) or drop them off in the official drop boxes by noon on the 11th October.
What is STV?
STV means Single Transferable Vote. It’s a way of voting where you can choose more than one person to vote for - and rank them in the order that you like or prefer them.
How to Fill Out Your Voting Paper
-
Find the list of candidates on your voting paper.
-
Read the Candidate Booklet to help your choices.
-
Put a NUMBER next to each person that you want to vote for:
-
Write 1 next to your favourite person.
-
Write 2 next to your second favourite person.
-
Write 3 next to your third favourite, and so on....
-
-
Rank as many - or few - people as you like. You don’t have to rank them all.
-
Just make sure you only use each number once.
-
Don’t use ticks (✔️) or crosses (❌).
-
-
If there are people you that DON’T like, DON’T rank them.
It looks and works a bit like this (NB this is just a sample, NOT the official WCC voting paper)
What Happens to Your Vote?
-
If your number 1 choice gets enough votes first up, they are elected to Council!
-
If they don’t get elected first up, then your vote goes to your number 2 person.
-
Your preferred choice(s) can still get elected if they get enough #2, #3 or #4 votes.
-
Vote counting keeps going until all seats are filled (NB there are 3 seats in the Eastern Ward).
-
Your vote is never wasted - it moves on to your next choice.
